9th Annual Harvest Celebration
City Market’s annual Harvest Celebration gathers together as many local farmers and producers as we can fit under our big white tent. On top of lots of delicious samples, we will have prize giveaways, face painting, henna art, kids’ activities, and more! Mayfly, an old-time duo from Montpelier, will provide music. Free and fun for the entire family.

In addition to the local fare regularly offered on our menu, for one day only we are adding a very special cheese plate. Castleton Crackers will be paired with cheeses from all over Vermont. Add a glass of wine from East Shore Vineyard of Grand Isle to complete the experience.
Local Lunch for Dinner with the Burlington School Food Project
Flynn Elementary School (hosted by City Market)
Crack open the doors of a school cafeteria to see the fantastic changes being made to school lunch in Burlington, a national Farm-to-School model. Eat a delicious, free meal featuring Shepherd’s pie with pasture-raised Vermont beef, Shelburne Farms macaroni and cheese, salad bar with local veggies and pickles, and apple crisp. Local Garlic 101: Garlic Planting, Cooking, and Wellness
In this class participants will learn garlic planting and growing techniques as well as culinary and medicinal uses. Just in time for fall seeding, Julie Rubaud of Red Wagon Plants will share information about growing garlic and will have seed garlic available for purchase. City Market’s own General Manager, Clem Nilan, will share his favorite garlic recipes, and herbalist Cristi Nunziata will discuss medicinal preparations of garlic.

In this City Market class taste and learn about the different varieties with Vermont cookbook author Andrea Chesman (Author of Recipes from the Root Cellar and Serving up the Harvest). Help prepare and enjoy a few unexpected dishes that will sustain you through the long winter ahead.

The Greenhorns Bike-In Movie
The Greenhorns is a documentary film about young farmers. With the average age of farmers in the United States pushing 60, come get a look at how our country will build the next generation of local farms and build a resilient, sustainable local food system! American Flatbread will be selling pizza and beer and we’ll have lots of free local popcorn. Local Beef & Veggie Turnovers

Learn to make a classic beef and vegetarian chard, apple, and goat cheese turnovers in this hands-on cooking class with local ingredients. While the turnovers are baking, we will toss together a fresh local salad to enjoy with our meal. Caroline Homan, City Market’s Food Education Coordinator, will teach this class.
Sourdough Bread & Focaccia

Keep a fire going in the hearth for homemade bread. In this City Market Class, Joe Cleary will show participants how to make sourdough bread and focaccia. Participants will take home a sourdough starter.
Joy of Cheesemaking
Book Talk and Tasting with author Jody Farnham
Local master cheesemakers and authors of The Joy of Cheesemaking: The Ultimate Guide to Understanding, Making, and Eating Fine Cheese (Skyhorse Publishing) discuss the processes of making cheese at home and provide samples of artisan cheese for you to taste. Books will be available for purchase.
Crop Mob: Rockville Market Farm

What’s a crop mob? It’s a work party on a farm helping with a big project while enjoying each other’s company and getting to hang out with a really cool farmer! We’ll help farmer Eric Rozendaal with fall farm clean up and then enjoy a BBQ with meat and veggies raised on the farm. We’ll finish off the night helping Eric move his chickens in. Heirloom Apple and Pumpkin Pies

Put on your apron and learn the secret to baking pies like grandma did in this City Market class. Laura Kanya (of Vermont Mystic Pies and Sugarsnap Café) demonstrates how to make a rich, buttery pie crust with local flour and butter and fill it with autumn’s bounty from the fields and orchards. Don’t leave without eating a slice of warm, heavenly pie.
Corn to Tortilla Kids’ Class
Where do tortillas come from? Kids find out grinding local corn, press tortillas, and eating griddle-fresh tortillas with local cheese or honey in this drop-in hands-on workshop. (Parents or caregivers are welcome to stay and participate).

Tour the Intervale Farms

Did you know that we have 350 acres of farmland within Burlington city limits? Just a mile from downtown, the Intervale hosts 13 farms growing everything from blueberries to tomatoes to flowers, raising chickens, keeping bees and more. It doesn’t get much more local than that! In this City Market farm tour we’ll take a tractor-pulled hay wagon ride down the Intervale road to meet our uber-local farmers, get to see their fields, and sample their amazing local food along the way.
