I think I've learned a few things this week, and I'm going to use this last week of blogging about the Challenge to share them with you. Let me know what you think.
Lesson 1: Focus on What's Fresh I know: Duh! But I know that it's too easy to focus on the things we can't have if we're going the localvore route. It just becomes like any diet where we feel deprived - and that's the way we set ourselves up for the "rebounding" @mmveggies mentioned in a recent comment. If we're sitting around bemoaning all the things we're not allowed to have, we easily forget the wonderful things that are available. And a diet that's built around delicious things that are in season is one that naturally will keep us from getting bored with food, while gaining all the benefits we've been noticing and enjoying all week.
Have you tried the plums from Charlotte's Plum Hill Farm? I've mentioned them a couple times here over the past few weeks, but they're really so extraordinary that they deserve their own write-up. It seems like a farmer's market secret, and I'm a little reluctant to let it out. The Whites, who own the farm, grow stone fruits (cherries, apricots, many varieties of plum), which ripen from July until September, and then sell them in local markets.
I thought I knew plums, and have always liked them. But after trying the Whites', I realize I had never had one that was at its peak before. Unbelievably sweet and soft and delicious, almost the texture of a ripe persimmon; it's easy to see how these would be completely unsuitable for shipping. What can we do? We're forced to eat them now.
But I still have the impulse to preserve some. I asked Penny what they do to put them up for the winter. She showed me some of their jam, and then suggested slicing and freezing them to use in cakes, specifically plum upside-down cupcakes (wouldn't it be fun to adapt this recipe to do these?). I also took a couple pounds of them and tossed them in a big old jar with vodka, nasturtiums, some raw honey a friend brought, and some husk cherries I had around.
So while I know we'll have some plummy goodness to enjoy in the winter, I'm just eating a couple fresh every day.
